A destination wedding on a volcano…a legend…a paradise…Santorini. One of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea.

According to legend, there was once a prosperous land that disappeared into the seas, sunk by the angry gods. It is the story of lost paradise – a heaven on earth, perhaps too beautiful to be real. And although there are differing opinions as to where, exactly, this Atlantis once was, many scholars say they believe the magnificent, mysterious, volcanic Greek island of Santorini is, in fact, Atlantis. The source of the legend, say scholars, is the Minoan eruption of the volcano in the 16th Century BC.

Will we ever know? And does it matter? We love the legend and we secretly believe that Santorini is, in fact, Atlantis risen, because this incredible destination is as close to paradise and the stuff of myth as we could ever imagine. The two principal towns, Fira and Oja, cling to multicolored cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater), overlooking the Aegean. Whitewashed houses and churches (the latter with painted blue domes), the azure blue sky, green cacti and potted sea fig, and the clash of brilliant fuchsia bougainvillea or bright red geraniums against the white, the blue and the sea. It has to be seen to be fully believed. Or understood.

The shops. The small cafes and shops. The colors and the sounds, and perhaps more than anything else, the magnificent sunsets. Seriously, there is almost no way to describe the sunsets in Santorini. They are taken seriously by locals and tourists alike, and it is important to have your table, your position, your chair, all lined up well before – at least an hour before — the sun begins its extraordinary descent into the sea.

Some of our favorite Santorini restaurants are Mezzo, Alta, Naoussa, La Maison (the place where we saw the first sunset), and Karma. We’d love to be back at any of these places right now!

If you are planning a destination wedding in Santorini, there are many options. Civil ceremonies are allowed on the beach, on a boat, in one of the traditional villages, on a hotel terrace overlooking the Aegean’s blue. You are even allowed to marry at the edge of a volcano!

Our work is both organic and natural. We look for the parts of your story that some might miss: the moments of romance, the moments of joy, the color of the sky, the groom’s shadow against a whitewashed wall. We are not the photographers hired to “work a wedding” and produce a certain number of pictures of the bridal party and the groomsmen. That is not us. We look to give you photos to make you remember – and treasure – your day in emotions: smiles, maybe a small tear, and most likely both.
